Jackson County Newspapers

The Sylva Herald and Ruralite

Did you know the paper's new full-color publication, Across the Mountains, is available online as well as in print? The photographs of Jackson County are beautiful. This 35-page publication has articles that will interest locals and tourists alike, including a close look at Panthertown Valley, the history of the county's dams, and the story of national award-winning gospel musician Martin Cook.

The Smoky Mountain News

Among other content, the newspaper's latest opinion column appears online, often including valuable insights and facts that affect Jackson County citizens. Although the paper covers several counties in addition to ours, the regional perspective can be illuminating. From the October 10, 2007 editorial, for example:

If new businesses don’t value the small-town character we’re trying to preserve in Waynesville and in every other town in the region, then let them go elsewhere. There are plenty of others who will come along.

In Sylva, Franklin, Bryson City, Maggie Valley and Canton similar battles are being fought. The debate takes a slightly different turn in each town, but in every case there are candidates who recognize the need to help downtowns flourish and outlying business and residential district grow in ways that protect the characteristics that people here value. These are the people we need in office . . . .
