Sat. Oct. 20 in Cullowhee: Vendors & Demonstrators In Period Dress at Appalachian Arts & Crafts Bazaar
(Edited press release by Catch the Spirit of Appalachia)
On Saturday, October 20, 2007, from 9 until 5 at the Jackson County Recreation Complex (the Rec Center) in Cullowhee, the second annual Appalachian Arts & Crafts Bazaar will commemorate local artists and crafters who carry on highly prized skills of old.
The indoor festival features weaving, caning, sewing, painting, jewelry making, knitting, crocheting, wood carving, rug making and more.
Food will be made by some of the best cooks around: the ladies who supply Sunday meals at Cullowhee Baptist Church.
Presented by Catch the Spirit of Appalachia, Inc. (CSA), the Appalachian Homestead Farm & Preserve and the Jackson County Recreation/Parks Department, the artists and crafters at the festival all will be demonstrating in period dress.
One vendor is Dot Conner of Sylva, who will display her astonishing collection of aprons, many of which have stories not only of the people who wore them but of our culture as well. Some vintage aprons will be for sale, as well as a collection of quilting material.
Doris Gibson of Asheville will be selling handmade truffles, featuring chocolate ganache made with premium chocolate, butter and cream, enrobed with a thin coating of chocolate, creating the true “mouth-fill” effect chocoholics have come to appreciate. Her booth will feature candy for the upcoming seasons: for Halloween, ghosts, coffins, witches on brooms, tombstones and skeleton suckers. For the Thanksgiving season, pumpkins and turkey place card holders for Thanksgiving dinner.
Many of Gibson's chocolates are favorites to add to a basket (which she can create for you), while others make wonderful gifts.
David Ammons, a caner recently featured at Mountain Heritage Day in the Heritage section, will demonstrate his skills with different kinds of chair caning. His collection of vintage chairs will include certain chairs for sale: come to inspect two sets of four chairs from the 1930's that he has “reclaimed” back to their original glory.
Ammons is shown at right, with peddle-sewing machine demonstrator Linda Owen Vinson. Over 25 other crafters and artists will be sharing their wares and talents.
Come out to enjoy a trip back in time and to walk away with newfound handmade treasures for the special people on your Christmas list!
